We use all types of technologies, from biomechanics labs and medical labs to understand our athletes. Athletes from all over the world travel to the Santa Barbara, California, training centre, to take advantage of technology such as motion capture, force platforms and high-speed camera analysis, all to stay a cut above the rest.

The high-performance centre helps athletes discover their boundaries, so coaches can tailor training sessions to each athlete’s personal needs. We’re more interested in how – what systems they use. Are they symmetric when they jump? Do they have 30% more force going through their left side? So we put athletes in environments where we can test all the important systems of their sport and quantify those systems.

Training is centred around the science of the nervous system’s adaptation to stress – the idea is that improvements in athleticism are actually due to changes in the way the nervous system controls the muscular systems involved in movement. Muscle growth does not necessarily lead to running faster or jumping higher.

A key component of nervous system training is the use of high-intensity movements, combining force platforms and motion analysis software to obtain neuromuscular data for how athletes take advantage of different muscles in their body, as well as their speed, reaction time and weak points. Professionals at the centre can compare the results to others with similar patterns and help avoid future injuries by correcting body movements before they cause a problem.

What happens, after we collect all this data on the athlete, what we do is we compare them to our normative database. NBA players, such as Orlando Johnson visit the centre on a regular basis to stay in top form. They want to work on your weaknesses, they make… Not…if they can be your strengths, but to make them a little better.

So each summer I come here and try to get a little bit better. If I have an injury or something that’s nagging me, we can correct it here, so when I go to play my next season I’m ready to go. We can compare him to the 400 or so NBA athletes we’ve assessed and we can say, “Look, compared to your position, “you’re very good at this, you’re very good at this, “you’re very bad at this. “This thing you do over here, “everyone who’s done that has had a knee injury “within the next three years.”

My ankles are pretty stiff, so we’re just really working on that. Ever since I came in here, we’re just working on mobility. Mobility training differs from stretching in that it is a full-body experience.

Working sliding surfaces, motor control and joints alike, mobility allows a person to perform without limitations for a full range of motion within a movement pattern. Everybody has an Achilles heel. But learning to properly perform basic movements that are repeated on a daily basis allows to strengthen weak points before they become a problem. One thing I love about P3 is the technology that they bring to the table.

They show you how your body moves. They not only show you how your body moves but how it moves compared to other athletes. You see why guys are explosive, you see, you know, what mechanics make a great athlete. And one thing I come here for is, basically, to learn more about my body.

You can go out there, you can lift weights, you can throw them around, but if you have bad form, bad posture, that messes with your body, It takes its toll on your body, on your back. And here they give you proper form. Technology now is what’s helping people play longer, become bigger, become faster, and that’s what it’s about if you’re trying to become a top-notch athlete.

An invisible, powerful force is lifting professional basketball to new heights. Transforming how this multi-billion dollar sport is played. In elite sport, the differencebetween success and failure is often the finest of margins. Go Rockets, woo! The Houston Rockets areone of the top teams in NBA basketball.

They boast some of thesport’s biggest stars, including the NBA’s MostValuable Player in 2018. Offensively what we were trying to do, defensively what we were trying to do, so the focus is tryingto be on the same page every position for every game. In the past decade, the Rockets have risenfrom mid-table mediocrity to serious NBA Championship contenders.

It’s not just big names that have fueled this dramaticascent, it’s big data. The data that we go overis definitely important, you know, I think it givesus a little bit of an edge. To keep a balance of dataand instinct is a big thing. The Rockets’ recent success owes much to their pioneering decision to start crunching data aboutevery aspect of their game.

And this is the man responsible. Analytics has really permeated everything, our edge has allowed usto win the most games, 65 last year. Computer scientist Daryl Morey is the sport’s foremostdata and statistics guru among NBA bosses.

You can break winningdown into two things, one is how many points doyou get per possession, and then how do you get extra possessions? Ten years ago, Daryl set out to find that winning formula. The Rockets were one of four NBA teams to install a pioneeringvideo tracking system, which mined raw data from games.

What they discovered changedthe way teams tried to win. The data revealed which shots provided the best bang for buck, two-point dunks, and three-pointers, shot fromoutside the three point line, rather than long-range twopoint shots from inside it. It’s pretty dramatic, how powerful the three point shot is. You only have to make a thirdof your three point shots to be worth a half of your two. Even within that, there’s an extra miss you might rebound offensively.

Face up, pulls the trigger, buries it! In the 1990s, long two point shots from just inside the threepoint line were common. But Daryl’s analysisshowed that statistically, these shots provided the worst return. The number of attempted threepoint shots has increased every year for the past decade. In the 2017-18 season,the Rockets made more three pointers than anyother team in NBA history.

And this was a major reason they won more games than any of their rivals. Every percentage matters in sports, and extracting those percentages is what’s really becomemuch easier with data. We’re in a pretty bigtransformational stage in sport. Professor Rajiv Maheswaran co-founded Second Spectrum. The analytics company gathers and codes a vast range of increasingly granular data for all 30 NBA teams.

It feels like two chess pieces. Cameras now track and record 3D spacial data for everyplayer and ball movement at 25 frames per second. Machine learning technologyuses this huge volume of data to produce interactive visualizations, allowing teams to analyze the minutiae of their performances, andachieve marginal gains on court. At first we taught themachine about 20 terms, right now it knows over500 basketball terms.

So the machine is essentiallythe integrated knowledge of all the elite basketball coaches. There is a particular focus on all important dataaround player movement, and the probability of making a shot. What we can do with the machine is to say look at all the shots like this one, and tell me the chancethat the shot really could go in either for this playeror for an average player.

And you bring in all thethings that a person can see, not just where they’re standing,but how they’re moving, what type of shot they’re trying to take, where are the defenders? And what we can do is put a number to what previously was a feeling,or something qualitative.

Data analysis has even changed the type of players that successful teams, like the Rockets, have. Players today are on averageleaner and more agile. Having skilled players, even if they’re a little smaller, is more important than having bigger guys who are less skilled. When it comes to recruiting new players from the college draft each season, poring over data on player performance has given the Rockets a winning edge.

We’ve been able to ekeout about a 5% edge, and that actually turns outto be a massive advantage. Pro basketball’s finale for the NBA title. Welcome to the Tech Race. En garde. Thanks to wireless systems, fencing athletes have been liberated. In a world where wireless has become the norm, fencers, who historically have depended on cable to compete, have cut the cord. It’s always been my dream to basically eliminate these wires. Fencing has to keep moving so we can’t carry around big, heavy spools when we want to go fencing. You have to prepare each time and we lose time for training.

We visited the renowned Leon Paul Fencing Centre, where brothers Ben and Alex Paul have developed a wireless fencing system that aids in training. Essentially you just have a transmitter which sits in your back pocket and we’ve got a radio communication system which has been built specifically for wireless fencing.

So it’s not using any existing radio technologies out there. Wireless fencing looks like it’s going to be a very simple problem to fix but it’s much more difficult than people think. The main difficulty is actually that the fencers all have different equipment. Because it was specified for a wired system, without changing the fencer’s equipment, which would obviously be very expensive to do for the whole world, it’s very hard to solve the physics problem that is wireless fencing.

The device transmits hits to a main scoring box, which, when combined with laser-line technology, eliminates any doubts whether anyone has gone out of bounds. The wireless system gives you more freedom to move. When we find a way to protect the back of the head, you’ll be able to fence in circles. When I started as a kid, I definitely thought that’s what it’d be like, a bit of Pirates Of The Caribbean.

But it’s completely different, like dynamic chess. Strategy is a key word in fencing. The sport may suggest fighting, but the term comes from defence and has been part of the Olympic Games since the beginning, in 1896. Fencing runs deep in Ben and Alex’s family. Their father, Barry Paul, classified twice for the Olympic Games and their great-grandfather was also an instructor who later founded the London-based Leon Paul factory in the 1920s and made their first jackets using recycled sacks.

Now, when we get a hit, you can see the face being lit up and you actually can see how the fencer is feeling, and that again is, I think, going to add another dimension to fencing. As a fencer, when you score a touch, you can see the light straightaway, it lights up so you know, yes, I’ve made the touch.

The mask, which incorporates LED lighting, made its debut at the Olympic Games London 2012, adding a new dimension to the sport by illuminating combatants on each hit, giving immediate feedback and an element of emotion. Fencing is a very traditional sport and people don’t like change. We’ve always done it this way so people think we always will do it this way. But hopefully people will see wireless fencing is excellent for the sport and will open up great new opportunities.

In the future we will be looking at adding motion-tracking into the weapons so we’ll be able to tell how fast the fencer is moving, how fast the weapon is moving. You see films like Star Wars and Errol Flynn and Zorro and the fencers are running around and it looks fantastic. I love thinking about a new product and in the middle of the night I’ll come up with an idea and I’ll write it down.
