this time with the Huawei Mate 40 Pro, This has just been announced and it’s offering some cool features. Let’s take a look, we’ll alsocompare it to the Mate 30 Pro as well as the P 40 Pro. Full black box, and you’ll notice this ring, what Huawei call the space ring, which is part of the design of the Mate series, co-engineered with Leica, of course. And then we’ve got the explore it on App Gallery go, explore it on App Gallery logo, the Huawei App Gallery which is now an important part of all Huawei devices.

Let’s put that to the side for a second while we see what else we get inside the box. There’s a clear gel case, always nice to have. A SIM card tool. We do have a charger. This is a Huawei super charger, 66 Watts of fast wired charging. I don’t know why they went with 66 instead of 65. Maybe it was to get a watt advantage over the competition, I don’t know. But crazy fast. We’ve also got a USB type A to USB type C cable as well as some USB type C earphones.

So these are also included in the box. Right now, let’s get to the device And here it is, this is the my stic silver color and it’s a, it’s really trippy like, depending on the angle that you’re looking at it at it gives you a very different color. Huawei of course, very big on some really nice gradient finishes. This has a matte finish, which I do like.

It reminds me a little bit of the P 40 Pro silver frost finish but it’s definitely a lot more colorful. And of course, we have the space ring design where the cameras are placed. So let’s just bring in the Mate 30 Pro for a bit of a comparison. And you can see that there isa resemblance of the design. But the Mate 30 Pro has all the four cameras within this circle, where as on the Mate 40 Pro they are actually on the ring it self.

Now, of course we have a metal frame and as the Mate 30 Pro had the Mate 40 Pro has a very curved display. This is Huawei call a horizon display and it’s got an 88 degree angle curve. And that brings us onnicely to the display. This is a 6.76 inch Flex OLED display. So I believe the flex is because it kind of flexes over the sides. Now this has a two seven two two by one, three, four, four resolution. So it’s quite an odd resolution. So it’s almost Quad HD,but it’s not quiet Quad HD. And it does have a 90 Hertz refresh rate.

So, it looks like Huawei, like they did with the P 40 Pro, are trying to go for a bit of a balance between resolution and refresh rate, rather than just going for one or the other. And from what I can see, it looks like a very good display. We do have a small top and bottom bezels, but the bezels on left and right, you pretty much can’tsee, thanks to that curve. And we have a pill shape punch out for a dual selfie camera setup like we had on the P 40 Pro.

However, these are a little bit different. Now, quickly bringing in the Mate 30 Pro again from last year, you can see that there is a resemblance with those very curved edges, but the top and bottom bezels are a little bit smaller, I can see. And we had a notch for the Mate 30 Pro. We don’t have this on the Mate 40 Pro. We have that pill shape cut out. And if we bring in the P 40 Pro, you can see once again there is that resemblance with that pill shape cut out. But as mentioned, the camerasare a little bit different. http://tech

So instead of a primary camera and a depth sensor like we had on the P 40 Pro, on the Mate 40 Pro, we have a primary camera and then we have an ultra wide camera for group selfies. And when you’re taking selfies, if the Mate 40 Pro detects that there’s more people in the shot, then it will automatically switch to the ultra wide camera. Now there’s also a bunch of sensors in this pill cut out, and that is for 3-D face ID. And as always, it does work really well, and it’s very fast.

But we also have the option of the in-display finger print scanner. So, I do like that we’ve got these options especially in the day and age where we’re all wearing masks. You know, face ID is very convenient and it’s quicker generally. But having the option of the in-display fingerprint scanner as well is definitely nice to have. Now let’s take a look atthe rear facing camera. So, as mentioned we actually have the cameras inside this ring now.

The primary camera is a 50 megapixel ultra vision camera, which has an RYYB sensor. Now, as you guys probably already know the RYYB instead of the RGB means that you can capture more light And as well as that, this is a very large size sensor. It’s one over 1.28 inches, which makes us one of the largest sensors on any smartphone. And as far as I can tell, this is a very similar, if not the same sensor, as we’ve got on the P 40 Pro.

Which is good news because the P 40 Pro takes some amazing images. There’s a 20 megapixel ultra wide camera, for all of the ultrawide photos and videos. We’ve then got a 12 megapixel Periscope zoom camera, which is going to give you five times optical zoom, 10 times hybrid zoom, and up to 50 times digital zoom. Finally, we also have aTime-of-Flight sensor as well. Now, if the photos from the P40 Pro and the P 40 Pro Plus are anything to go by, this is going to have excellent results.

But Huawei are really also concentrating on video capabilities this time too. So on the Mate 40 Pro, you do have real time HDR processing which is going to give you much better dynamic range. And there’s also a few new video features. One is tracking shots, where you can select your subject and it’s going to follow your subject around. There’s also steady shot, which is going to keep your footage stable.

Now, having a quick lookat these on the interface, as soon as you do switch to these modes, you do switch to 1080p automatically from 4K. So something to bear in mind. It looks like it does crop in on that sensor, and then it’s going to go around tracking or providing that stabilization. Now, of course, we’re going to have to do lots of tests and put all of these features through their paces.

On the right hand side we’ve got a power button as well as a volume rocker. Now this is a physical volume rocker. On the Mate 30 Pro, Huawei did go for a touch solution. So I’m glad they’ve kind of gone back and gone down the physical buttons. They just seem to work better, especially when it comes to volume. At the top, we do have an infrared sensor, something which we really don’t see much of these days.

So Huawei is still holding onto that. And then we’ve got one of the two speakers. So we’ve got one speaker at the top and one speaker at the bottom. So we do have stereo speakers. Also at the bottom, there is a USB type C port,as well as a SIM card tray. Now in this SIM card tray, youdo have space for a SIM card as well as a nano memory card. So that’s a proprietary memory card which you can get to expand the storage on here. And internally, you do get256 gigabytes of storage with eight gigabytes of RAM.

And this is powered by the Kirin 9000 chipset, the world’s first five nano meter integrated 5G chipset. So the keyword there is, integrated, 5G, Yes, we’ve seen that the Apple A14 is the world’s first five nano meter chipset, but it doesn’t have integrated 5G. 5G is a separate modem. This is integrated on here, which should help with efficiency. Now in terms of speed and performance, obviously this has been absolutely fine in my usage. But I will be using it some more. It is definitely oneof the fastest chipsets out there right now. And for the battery, we do have a 4,400 milliamp hour battery.

And in my experience, Huawei devices are very good when it comes to battery life. we do have the 66 watt wired charger, as we mentioned earlier on. But of course, we dohave wireless charging. And this time it is 50watt wireless charging, which I believe is the fastest on any smartphone. Now, of course you will have to buy that wireless charger separately. I actually don’t have one, I’mnot sure one exists as yet. I do have a 40 watt charger from Huawei, which is super fast but this 50 watt charger will charge your device even faster. Of course, we still do have reverse wireless charging.

So you will be able to use the Mate 40 Pro to charge your other devices wirelessly, whether that’s some earbuds or something. And now let’s talk about the software. This does come with the latest version of EMUI. EMUI 11, which is based on Android. But, as you guys know, Google Play Services are not supported.

But just in a nut shell, what does this mean? Well, it means you’re not going to be able to get apps such as YouTube, Google Drive, Gmail. However, you will be able to use all of these services by a browser. And you will be able to find a lot of the other apps via the Huawei AppGallery, Petal Search, as well as third party app stores.

Personally, I’ve used APK Pure quite a bit in the past, and that’s been really good in terms of finding and updating lots of different apps out there. But Huawei has been working very hard on the App Gallery, as well as Petal Search, to be able to find apps that most people use.

So of course the situationisn’t perfect by any means, but there are lots of work arounds. Now, Huawei has also been really working on their integration among stall of their different devices, something that we’re always calling one plus eight plus N. But essentially if you do have other Huawei devices maybe if you’ve got a Mate Book laptop, maybe if you’ve got some Huawei ear buds, a Huawei watch, then these are going to seamlessly integrate with each other.

And you’ll be able to use features such as multi-screen collaboration, which will let you fully control you Mate 40 Pro while you’re on your Mate Book laptop. Now, unfortunately, Idon’t have any information about pricing and availability. But we will be looking for a release around November time, I would assume, based on the rumors. And that is the Huawei Mate 40 Pro.
