As technology replaces old jobs, it’s also creating new ones. I’m Aki Ito, and I’m here to show you the jobs of the future. (upbeat music) My name is Katie Morich,and I’m a vertical farmer. Its farm is here, in thisindustrial park in New Jersey. How are you? It’s the last place you’d expect to find any sign of life. We take extra precautionto make sure we’re not bringing any contaminants into the farm, so we’re gonna wearhairnets, and then this is just gonna cover allyour street clothes. Katie wears a clean uniform every day. Visitors like me are handeda non-negotiable jumpsuit. Alright. Step inside and you’ll see a cross between a factory and a lab. Trays of produce are verticallystacked to save space, and each of them is givenjust the right amount of light, water and nutrients at the optimal temperature and humidity.

It’s an incredible level of precision, which is why Katie cangrow more faster with less water and no pesticides. (shimmering notes) It’s also what let’s her grow things that taste like nothing you’ve ever had before. What’s this? This is the sorrel. Mmm. That tastes like candy apple. Whoa!That’s good, right? The majority of thisfacility is automated. (electronic notes) The data is collected by sensors and a computer controls growingconditions for the crops. For the things that themachines can’t do yet, Katie and her fellowhuman farmers fill in, and even those tasks are dictated by the software that runsthis whole operation.

It lets me know what I have to do, what time I should be doing it by, and that’s how I get my day done. Do you ever, like, rebelagainst the computer’s orders? Uh, once in a while, if we’re trying to do a little experiment ofour own, we’ll be like, okay, is the system tellingus the correct things? Most of the time it is. All the time it’s right. (laughs) After a full day at the farm, Katie likes to bring homesamples to her husband, Jase, (blender whirrs)and her cat, Burt. Salt, pepper? Maybe a little more…Garlic? On the menu are twoitems from Katie’s farm.

Basil, for pesto pasta. That’s so good. And mixed greens for a salad. I’m terrified, everyone’s judging. Cheers, guys. Cheers.Cheers. (bottles clink) Katie fell in love with environmental science in college, but after graduating she struggled to find afull-time career in the field. Jase had to deal with me a lot (laughs), you know, coming home to me crying and trying to figure out ifI’m making the right decisions. And then, somehow,online, Bowery popped up. She told me about thisjob, like, Bowery Farming, it’s like an indoor, verticalfarm, and I was like, alright, this sounds like total BS. So, I took my work truckand I said, “You know, let me swing around and seewhat this is all about.”

So I drove up to it, doesn’t look like there’sa farm in there at all. So I called her and I waslike, “Listen, I know you’re psyched about this job, butit seems super sketchy.” But I figured I’d go andcheck it out for myself and I pulled up and it wasexactly as how he described, but I gave it a shot. And so in 2017, Katie joined Bowery. She became employee number nine. This is really my first real,full-time, big-girl job. And it was a little intimidating at first, coming into this companywith people that have like, their PHD and I don’tnecessarily have that background, so I constantly doubted myself when I first started at Bowery.

I wasn’t worried abouther at all, you know. She said to us, “Can I do this?” And I used to tell her to havea little faith in herself. Katie grew up in atypical New Jersey suburb with two working parents. They’ve tried to stay awayfrom putting too much pressure on their only child.

When we heard about what she was doing and realized that this issomething that didn’t exist when we were younger and Ithought back from my generation, you know, PC’s came outwhen I started working and my parents probablywould’ve said I was crazy if I went into an IT field at the time, but now look what happened. So, it’s not a good ideafor us to try to tell her what to do because it’s a different world. (beeping) Bowery is backed by some of Silicon Valley’s top investors. And with almost $30million dollars of funding, the startup is expanding fast. And in May, after all that timeshe spent doubting herself, Katie got promoted to leada team of her own farmers.

The produce she grows suppliesa few nearby grocery stores as well as this restaurant in Manhattan. (pan sizzles) It’s less than 10 milesaway from the Bowery farm. What do you think? It’s delicious! Alright, let me get some of… But for Katie, it’s not just about making premium vegetables forpeople who can afford them. I want people to have thepurest produce imaginable, and I want that to bereadily available to anybody. The world’s population is set to reach 9.8 billion people by 2050. Two-thirds will live in cities.

And we’re gonna need allkinds of new technology to sustainably feed everyone. The key to making that food affordable is to continue to makemore with fewer farmers. But no matter how high-tech all this gets, Katie thinks there willstill be a place for her. I just think there’s something about the human mind that youcan’t really replicate. So I think we could stillwork closely with technology, but I still think it’snice to have a human there. It’ll also be pretty lonely for the robots if they don’t have anybodyto talk to.

And that gives a littlebit of an indication of the pressure on the food system. We just face a huge challenge. With the growth in population, with the change in consumption behavior. With the climate crisis, how do you secure your food production? The real secret is thesustainable production.

It should be with lessinputs, with less fertilizer, less pesticides, less water. It needs to be sustainable. Otherwise, we will destroy our planet, yeah? – The securityof the food system is one of the world’s most pressing challenges. But the story of howthis small country became an unexpected food superpower might just have some answers for how we tackle it. The 7 Futuristic technology Farms That Will Feed the World.

Consider this: if everyoneon earth ate the diet of the average American,that would require all the habitable land tobe used for agriculture, and we’d still be 38% short. And that’s right now. If there’s one place thatapproach is most clear, it’s in their unrivaledgreenhouse growing operations. – There’s a very niceexample of about tomato which really gets a goodinsight on how we want to produce our foods in sustainable ways.

So, if you produced tomatoesin an open field situation in Spain, then you will, uh, end up at the end of the growing seasonwith four kilograms per square meter. If you do this in ahigh tech greenhouse in the Netherlands at themoment, you will end up with 80 kilograms per squaremeter which is 20 times more. But the best part of thestory is that the 80 kilograms of tomatoes, we do itwith four times less water compared to an open field situation. Water is one of the bigchallenges that we face. Just had a cup of coffee. Do you know how many litersof water were needed to produce that cup of coffee? Rough guess. – [Interviewer] Ten? – 150.

So, high technology offers,really, a possibility of producing a lot of food per square meter in a sustainable way. – [Interviewer] The Dutchlead the world in tomato yield while using a fraction of the water that other countries use. But it’s not just tomatoes. Measured by yield per square mile, they’re the world leader in the production of chilies, and greenpeppers, and cucumbers. Number five for potatoes,onions, and carrots. The list goes on. But the bottom line isthey’ve been able to get so much out of so little. – If we are able to produce 80 times more with four times less water, that’s, that’s great. That’s great news. – [Interviewer] Most peopleknow that greenhouses allow a grower to tweakevery little thing, but the Netherlands istaking it to the next level.

They’ve perfected thegreenhouse as the ideal environment to continuouslytest and implement all kinds of ways to optimize growth. From things as simple as testing what hues of LED lights can increase pest resistance and improve nutritional value, to things as crazy as moth killing drones. – So we’re, at the moment,we don’t have any products who can control actually the moths. And then finally theywill produce caterpillars, and those caterpillarsthey can do a lot of harm to many different crops. A drone is able to detect the moth. Also, to see how it’sflying and with it wings, propellers will just, will just crush, actually, the moth. There’s a relentless drivetowards innovation to create better and moreefficient growing techniques.

They’ve even startedtaking the human touch completely out of it. Some of the latest techrelies on AI to learn plant behavior andconstantly adjust conditions without any input from a farmer. – For example, what we’re testing in this compartment is a climate computer. So we have different sensors, and it actually, wemeasure the plant activity.

Based on plant activity, the computer is actually controlling thewhole climate by itself. – [Interviewer] Ultimately,the key to solving our global food challengeisn’t just in relying on super efficient foodproducers to carry the weight for everyone else,it’s learning from and adopting that technology. At the World Horti Center,you see that effort first hand in an ongoing experiment. They’ve built, basically, agreenhouse within a greenhouse. Inside the largest structure, they’re able to replicateany climate on earth to figure out whatmodifications need to be made to realize the same yields they’re getting in the Netherlands in anyother country on earth. – We have a cooperativeproject going on with Columbia. And we can, in fact, mimic,we can emulate the climate, the current climateconditions in Columbia, put their crop in and seehow crop behaves under the circumstances that we have in Columbia. We can totally flip the seasons around. We can make it a sunny day on Christmas.

Running these systems are very expensiveand they need to operate as efficiently as possible. Here on one of SodMastersGA’s fieldsin Montrose Georgia Farm Manager Glynn Solomon uses a system from Reinke Manufacturing.[Glynn Solomon – Farm Manager, SodmastersGA] Irrigation is probably the only saving gracewe have in the farm community now.

Without irrigation it is just really tough to growa quality product especially when you start talking turf grass. Turf grass just reallycan’t be grown unless you can irrigate. Most of these pivots I have got on the farm I can turn them on remotely from my cell phonenow. I can change the direction, stop them at any time, I think one of the favorite thingsis the guys when they are out spraying or working they call me and tell me to move thepivot a little bit so they do not have to get out of the tractor that is air conditioned.

It allows themto focus more on other things that need to be done around the farm and get more donewith the same amount of effort. We really like the technology there is a lot of simpleaspects of it that can save you time and keep you from having to go do a lot of strugglingand all.

It is amazing to see what’s happening just in the last decade where we have gone frommanual switches and push buttons to touch screen computerized control panels, GPS guidanceon components, as well as remote control remote monitoring operations. We can now monitortemperature, soil moisture, leaf wetness, humidity, and report that directly to thegrower on anyone of a number of mobile devices and then allow that grower to make real timechanges to their irrigation scheduling and operation with out ever having to come outto the field.

That has just been a tremendous boost for the efficacy of the farmer, theyield boost, as well as being a better steward of the water and the natural resources.[Wildman] If a farm has an irrigation system in placeit can be fitted with new technologies.

This pivot at Sod Masters is a good example ofthat, but the real challenge for Irrigation professional is communication with the famers. You know it’s a slow process but don’t losesite of the fact that it is here, so it may not be something that every grower is comfortablewith today, everybody has to find their own comfort level. but prepare for it becauseit is coming and so if it is not you if it is your next generation at least prepare yourselfwhen you are making your equipment and product selections.
